Bike Aid Pro Cycling
September 26, 1991
I am a South African Road and Track Cyclist, currently riding for Team Bike Aid Pro Cycling.
I started cycling when I was 14 years old. My dad was a cyclist and I grew up on the track. I started off with BMX riding where I used to race BMX for fun, up and down the streets. Cycling is an expensive sport so when I showed interest in it and wanted to start, my dad was very clear about me making sure that it is what I wanted and that if I wanted to do cycling, I must focus on it and put all of my efforts into it. At the time, I was also playing rugby and so I stepped away from that and started cycling. I started training a lot with some older riders. When I started racing as an u14, it was easy to get good results and win races as a youngster and when I got to u16 I was pretty dominant in my years in the Cape on the road and on track as well. I have won multiple provincial Western Cape championships. As an u16 rider I got selected to compete in Junior World Championships in 2008. Unfortunately luck wasn’t on my side because I crashed in the last second event. From there – I tried to focus on the road racing, which became my passion and what I loved to do.
As an u18 Junior, I started focusing a lot more on the road racing. I had a 3 month professional contact with Toyota SuperSport with Barry Austin, and then after that I got a contract for the rest of the year with EMG.
Then I got a contract with Dean Edwards in the following year. It was a good year but then I got an injury and then I was out for half the year. Then the next year, Dean gave me another opportunity and I came back stronger. I competed in the u23 National Championships and steppe up my game which resulted in me winning my first road race. Since then it has just been up and onwards.
